As the Sun becomes more active after a nearly three-year activity slumber, the massive solar storms that lie ahead of us for the upcoming several sunspot-cycle years will not respect any geographic boundaries or political borders.

While humans have found a shared imperative in the fight against the coronavirus, we need something more than a common enemy to combat the isolation and loss that have come to define this pandemic.

Today, the threat has never been higher of a new round of above-the-atmosphere (“exo-atmospheric”) nuclear explosions.

The current capability of our technological society to predict space weather is primitive. Yet our national electric power grid, our thousands of satellites in Earth orbit and virtually all of our crucial electronic gadgetry are extremely vulnerable to the effects of severe space weather.

Often the focus of NASA and other space agencies is the large, big-ticket flight projects. However, since the budgets for smaller missions are limited and projects are nimble, they can be accomplished at quite modest cost and low risk to the success of the overall program.

It outlines programs, initiatives and investments in the field that will promote fundamental advances in scientific knowledge of the space environment — from the interior of the sun, to the atmosphere of Earth, to “space weather.” Considering scientific value, urgency, cost, risk and technical readiness, the report identifies the highest-priority targets in the period 2013-2022. (A prepublication version of the report is now available.)

Worth the Risk: Restoring NASA https://spacenews.com/worth-risk-restoring-nasa/ https://spacenews.com/worth-risk-restoring-nasa/#respond http://dev.spacenews.com/worth-risk-restoring-nasa/ Many in the aerospace community have been saddened to witness the stifling effects of increasing conservatism that has come to overlay so many of the programs that NASA now pursues. Costs have skyrocketed, schedules have stretched, and content has diminished both in boldness and reach. While one can understand the pressures for assured success, the institutional reaction to that pressure — attempting to avoid failure often regardless of cost — is ultimately eroding NASA’s capabilities and mortgaging its future.
